About This Paperdoll

In the spring of 2008, my daughter Tiffany Barr took a course in Book Arts at Mills College called "Private Lives, Public Editions", focusing on a group of female expatriot artists and writers in France in the early 1900's. As their final project, each student researched the life of a member of that circle, and designed her own book showcasing what she had learned. Tiffany chose Sonia Delaunay, an artist who worked with abstract shape and vibrant colors. Sonia applied this style to many art forms, but was most influential for her contributions to fashion and textile design.

Tiffany found it fitting to create her book in the form of a paper doll, with outfits derived from Sonia's watercolor sketches.

Each page of the book contains one of Sonia's designs in a vignette, with Tiffany's paper doll interpretation (done in markers and color pencils) beside it. The cover is Tiffany's original water color design.
