Notes for John Cocke
Settled on Burks Fork, Montgomery County in 1772. He was working his fields in 1774 when he observed an indian hiding behind a tree. He grabbed a rifle and killed the indian. Another indian fled.

Deeded property to son Andrew Cock June 1, 1787 D.B. #A-450. He disappears in early 1800's and believed to be in his seventies to eighties. Presumed he and wife Elizabeth spent last years on farm of Andrew Cock to whom they deeded property.

The most complete reference is found in "Carroll 1765-1815, The Settlements" by John Perry Alderman, Ref: 975.5 A361 Virginia.

I have seen his birthplace listed as New York, and as several different counties in Virginia, including Essex, Bedford, Brunswick and Henrico. His father’s given name appears variously as William, Maurice, Matthew, and Alexander, with no sources given. (I assume these are most likely the names of Cock or Cocke men with sons John of approximately the right age.) I’ve also seen his mother’s name given as Sarah Chisholm or Chrisholm (wife of William), as Mary, maiden name unknown (this paired with the father Matthew or Maurice), and as given name unknown, maiden name Bradley (this paired with the father Alexander - perhaps a daughter Mrs. Alexander Cock(e) with son John was listed in the will of some Bradley.)
Notes for Mary "Elizabeth" Goad
Birth recorded in North Farnham Parish Register in Richmond County.
Notes for John & Mary "Elizabeth" (Family)
His place of marriage appears in various family trees as Bedford, Pittsylvania, and Wise counties of Virginia.
