Notes for John Hall
The birthdate of March 1843 is from the 1900 census. It might be off by one year, since he was listed as age 8 in 1850 and age 18 in 1860.

Information that John Hall who married Amanda Donohue is the same person as John the son of Jacob Hall and Nancy Brown is from email correspondence with Jackie Pottle, a great-granddaughter of Francis M. “Frank” Hall and Mollie Cox. I had already conjectured that he might be, since Jacob and Nancy had a son named Francis M. Hall, and John might have named a son after his brother. Also this John had a son named Jacob. But since John Hall is such a common name, I did not link him in that way until I got confirmation from a descendant.
Notes for Rebecca [Cox Hall]
Adjacent stones in New Alfrey Cemetery for John Hall, with no dates, and Rebecca Hall, death date of 1918, are probably for this John & Rebecca. But the Kentucky Death Index lists no Rebecca Hall (or Becca, Becky, etc.) who died in 1918.

Her birthplace is listed as West Virgina on the 1900 census, but West Virginia did not exist until after the Civil War. So what was apparently meant was a county of Virginia that later became part of West Virginia.
Census Notes for John & Rebecca (Family)
1900 census of Rowan Co., KY, Pearce precinct, p. 208A, lists as family #57:
Hall, John, 57, b. March 1843, Ky Ky Ky, married 13 years; Rebecca, 55, b. April 1845, WV Va Va; married 13 years, 1 child, 1 living.

The next household is that of Frank Hall age 26 with wife Mollie. Note that there are no children living with the family, so Rebecca’s one living child is likely to be an adult. There is no “2” indicating a second marriage in the marriage column for either spouse, but it was almost surely a second marriage for both of them.

In 1910 Rebecca is listed as Beccie age 60 with the family of Frank and Mollie Hall. Her relationship is written as mother-in-law, but then there is an X through the “in”. This suggests that Rebecca is either Frank’s mother or step-mother, and thus that Frank’s father is John.

This hypothesis was confirmed in June 2002 by a post on the Rowan County Message Board at Rootsweb in response to the obituary posting for Orbie Newton Hall, a son of Frank M. Hall. The poster, Jackie Pottle, is a granddaughter of Orbie Newton Hall, and thus a great-granddaughter of Frank M. Hall. She posted that Frank’s parents were John Hall and Amanda Donahue, and that John’s second wife Rebecca was the mother, from her first marriage, of Frank’s wife Mollie. So Rebecca was both Frank’s stepmother and his mother-in-law!
