Notes for Tobias L. Phillips Jr.
According to Elza Cox in his Genealogy of William Tobias Phillips18, Tobias L. Phillips Jr. never married, but had children by at least five different women, and supported them all. Barb Reininger’s Floyd County Genealogy web site13 reports the same, but there is some disagreement on which child belongs to which mother. (Both in cases where a mother and her adult daughter and the children of Tobias were all in the same household, and the mother and daughter had the same name.)

The people that Elza lists as the children of Tobias by Sally Cox Quesenberry, widow of George S. Quesenberry, though, Barb lists as the children of Sally and George’s daughter, Sarah Quesenberry born about 1830. I am following the latter, because a liaison between two teenage first cousins makes much more sense than one between a boy and his aunt who was more than forty years his senior. (Note that since both Sarah/Sally Quesenberry’s were in the same household, the 1860 census record is inconclusive.) The second woman he had a child by, Rachel Montgomery, is the only one that Tobias was not related to. The third woman he had children by, Nantie Phillips, was the daughter of a marriage between his double first cousin and his second cousin. His fourth family not published by request. The fifth woman he had children by, Sally Cox, was his first cousin on the Cox side, and his second cousin on the Phillips side.

On p. 14, The Genealogy of William Tobias Phillips, Elza Cox writes "Tobias L. Phillips, Jr. ... died in 1890. However on his tombstone located in the Cox Family Cemetery on the William Moten Cox property at Indian Valley it reads: Tobias Phillips, Sr., born Feb 19, 1932 died Dec 19, 1895." Elza does not mention his source for the 1890 date of death.
