Notes for Stephen Sharp
Most online family trees attach Stephen Sharp as the son of James Sharp and Margaret Owens. Some of them attach him as a son of the Joseph and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) who are the parents of Vincent Sharp of Bourbon Co. and Cynthia Sharp who married Flemstead Wright. I do not know the source of either attribution.
Census
1810 census of Montgomery Co., Ky, lists:
Stephen Sharp, 1 m 26-44, 1 f 16-25; 1 m < 10, 2 f < 10.

The three children would be Elizabeth, Nancy, and James.

1811 Bath Co. Tax Assessors List includes on p. 30:

Stephen Sharp, 127 acres on Flat Creek, 1 wh m over 21, none 16-21
Moses Sharp, 165 acres Hingston, 1 wh m over 21, 3 blacks

1820 census of Bath Co., KY, lists family of:
Stephen Sharp, 2 m < 10, 1 m 16-18, 1 m over 45; 2 f < 10, 2 f 10-15, 1 f over 45.

(See notes for Mary Sharp for the later censuses for this family. See notes for Nancy Sharp for the other Sharp families in Bath.)
Census Notes for Mary Sharp
1840 census of Bath Co., Ky, West of Slate Creek, lists:
Mary Sharp, 1 f 50-59, 2 m 20-29, 1 f 20-29, 2 m 15-19, 1 f 15-19, 1 m < 5. Slaves: 1 m 24-35, 1 f 24-35.

1850 census of Bath Co., Ky, district 1, enumerated 16 Sept, lists as family #791:
Mary Sharp, 66, b. Va; William, 31, b. Ky; Thomas, 28, b. Ky; James, 38, b. Ky.

1860 census of Bath Co., Ky, Owingsville P.O., enumerated 22 June, lists on p. 66 as family #483:
Mary Sharp, 75, farmer, b. Virginia; Thomas, 36, b. Ky; James, 44, b. Ky.

The next household is her daughter Susan Hanley, as head of household.

1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, Sharpsburg precinct, enumerated 4 July, lists on p. 26 as family #156:
Sharp, Maria, 64, farmer, b. Ky; Maria, 87, b. Va; James, 59; James W., 34; Benjamin, 32; Jno K., 30, dry goods clerk; Anna, 27. All except the elder Maria born in Ky.

Maria age 64 is most likely the widow of one of Maria age 87’s sons. The younger three are most likely the sons of the younger Maria who heads the household. Their father is not likely to be William, Thomas or James, because no children were listed with them in 1850 or 1860.
Notes for Stephen & Mary (Family)
Identification of Stephen’s wife as the Mary who was head of household in 1850 and 1860 is based primarily on the death record for Susan Hanley, which gave her parents as Stephen and Mary Sharp, and the fact that Susan Hanley was living next to this Mary Sharp in both 1860 and 1870.

She may not be the mother of all of his children, though. For one thing, James was listed after William and Thomas in 1850, despite being older than them, which for single individuals usually indicates non-child status. For another thing, Nancy was described as “destitute of parents” in 1828, and there was no other Sharp family with daughters in 1820 (when he had four of them), so I really think Nancy is Stephen’s daughter. This combination suggests that the widow Mary who was listed in the 1850 through 1870 censuses may be the mother only of Susan, William, and Thomas.

There is a marriage record for Stephen Sharp and Mary Sharp on 22 June 1800 in Montgomery Co., Ky, though. So it is possible that Stephen had two wives named Mary, his cousin Mary Sharp whom he married in 1800, and the second of whom he married around 1812 or 1813, maiden name unknown.
