Notes for Harold Glenmore Ellington
The Kentucky birth index lists Harold G. Ellington, born 28 Jan 1923 in Bath Co., mother’s maiden name Mildred Williams.

His obituary in the Morehead News of Friday, Feb. 15, 2007 reported:

“MOREHEAD - Harold Glenmore Ellington, age 84, formerly of Morehead, died Sunday, February 11, surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren at Hospice Home, Burlington, North Carolina.

Harold was born January 28, 1923, in Bath County, Kentucky, the first of four children born to William Taylor Ellington and Marie Williams Ellington.

He moved to Morehead with his family in his early teens, and lived in the area for almost seventy years before moving to Elon, North Carolina in 2004.

He graduated from Breckinridge Training School in 1942, and then earned a teaching degree from Morehead State College after serving as a radio-gunner assigned to the 13th Army Air Force during World War II.

He married Pauline McBrayer, daughter of J. Earl and Martha Ann Pettit McBrayer, on August 25, 1949. To Harold and Pauline were born two daughters.

He accepted Christ as his Savior as a young man and worshipped and served at the Morehead First Church of God for more than fifty years. He enjoyed frequent fellowship with the Men's Brotherhood, served many terms on the Board of Trustees, and sang "traveling" bass in the choir.

He taught in the Rowan County School System for 28 years, 21 of those years at his beloved Haldeman School, where he mentored and encouraged 21 classes of 7th Graders.

He and his father were founding members of The Kentucky Long Rifles gun club and he competed as a member of the Kentucky Corps of Longriflemen state muzzle loading team. One of his greatest pleasures was demonstrating and explaining muzzle loading guns to a new generation.

Another of his passions was classic sports cars. He enjoyed owning and showing his '59 Corvette convertible (on clear days only!)

He loved bicycling, playing horseshoes, and running, and he earned many medals in the Rowan County and Kentucky Senior Olympic Games.

Harold was devoted to his family, and leaves them with many memories of joke-telling, sledding, shooting, singing, oral reading, and game-playing.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline, and their two daughters, Terry Ellington Nixon (Mrs. Douglas), of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Leigh Ann Ramey (Mrs. Rob) of Gibsonville, North Carolina. Also, eight grandchildren, Adam, Emily, Caroline and Ethan Nixon, at home; and Jordan Doss (Mrs. Christopher), Airman First Class Travis and Laina Ramey, Molly and Hannah Ramey, at home.

Other survivors include a sister, Alma Ellington Bellamy (Mrs. Harold), and a brother, James Lowell Ellington, both of Morehead. He also leaves many nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Gordon Ellington.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:30 A.M. Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at the Morehead First Church of God with Pastor Allan Hutchinson, Pastor Gary Ausbun and Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Burial followed in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with a tribute by the Long Rifles.

Pallbearers were Ben Tackett, Paul Richardson, Junior Kautz, David Wells, Art Litton and Gary Lewis.

In honor of the many hundreds of books Harold has enjoyed from the Rowan County Public Library, in lieu of flowers, if you wish to honor him with a gift, please make a contribution to the Rowan County Public Library in his memory.”
