Notes for Wiley V. Hall
The Rowan Co., Ky births report for 1878 lists Willey V. Hall, born 18 Sep 1878, father Benjamin F. Hall, born in Morgan Co., Ky, mother’s maiden name Mary C. Toliver, born in Letcher Co., Ky.

His death certificate (Vol. 52, #25584) lists Wiley Hall, age 37, died 4 Oct 1915 in Morehead, Rowan Co., Ky, born 1878, father Ben Hall, maiden name of mother Elizabeth Tolliver, cause of death fractured skull, which occurred on Aug 9, 1915. The informant field was blank, but the undertaker was listed as Lee Crawford, who was Wiley’s father-in-law. (It was common at that time for relatives to bury their own family members, and in those situations they listed whoever the body was released to as the undertaker.)

According to my Hall relatives, Wiley shot and killed Lindsey Shelton, son of the John Shelton who later married Wiley’s widow, Mary Crawford. I don’t know when that was; I can find no official record of Lindsey’s death. In fact, I can find no record of the John Shelton who married Mary Crawford (and Lula Cornett) even having a son named Lindsey. The only Lindsey Shelton I can find in the censuses was born about 1896 and was still alive in 1920, after Wiley’s death. And the John Shelton who married Mary Crawford was the same age as Wiley; any son he had would have been very young while Wiley was alive. So I think the story must have got confused somehow. Maybe Wiley did really kill someone named Lindsey Shelton, but the relationship was different. Or maybe Wiley was killed by a Lindsey Shelton. His death certificate does not mention how his skull got fractured.
Notes for Mary Jo Crawford
The Ohio deaths database lists Mary Jo C. Shelton, age 79, died 23 Jan 1962 in Scioto Co., Ohio, widowed.
Notes for Wiley V. & Mary Jo (Family)
Rowan Co. marriage book 6, page 63, lists Wyley Hall, 28, m. Mary Crawford, 23, on 27 Nov 1906. Wyley and his father, and Mary's mother, are listed as born Rowan Co., Wyley's mother is born Letcher Co., and Mary and her father born Fleming Co. The application lists the marriage to be at Lee Crawford's, the return lists it as "at bride's father's", by D. K. Jones, witnesses Clay Crawford and May Jones.
Census
1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Wagner precinct #9, lists as family #16:
Shelton, Mary Mrs., 39, head, married, manager of farm; John, husband, farmer, 42; Hall, Bula, dau, 11; Estie, dau, 9; Clella, son, 7; Lena, dau, 5 7/12; Nora, dau, 2 2/12; Shelton, Homer, son, 7/12. All born in Kentucky.

(My guess is that Mary was listed as head-of-household because all the Hall children were hers.)

The daughter Estie should be a son Estill.
