Notes for Ellen Reed
Her death certificate records Ellin Alfrey, age 72, born 7 Aug 1847 in Menafee Co., died 31 March 1919 in Farmers, Rowan Co., Ky, widow, father Johneson Reed, mother’s maiden name Serilda Sorapcher, both born in Ky, cause of death chronic parenchymatous nephritis, informant Pinkard Alfrey, Cogswell, Ky, burial in Alfrey graveyard.

Menifee County was formed in 1869, mostly from the southern half of Bath Co and a northern spur of Powell Co. Based on census records, Ellen was probably born in the part of Bath Co. that became Menifee.

Since Ellen’s parents were married in Sep 1847, she was probably really born in 1848, which is also more consistent with her childhood census records. (She was listed as 2 in 1850 and 11 in 1860.)
Census Notes for Anderson & Ellen (Family)
In 1870 Anderson was listed as age 25 with his parents, and Ellen Reed age 21 was in the household as a domestic servant.

1880 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pearce Prec. (#3), lists as family #212:
Anderson Alfrey, 37; Ellen, 30; Lillie, 7; Pinkard (son), 4; Lugene (dau.), 1; Alice Reed, 18, sister-in-law. All born in Ky.

Alice Reed is not really Ellen’s sister. Ellen’s parents were Johnathan Reed and Zerilda Shropshire; Alice’s were Andrew Reed and Catherine Spence. I have tentatively placed Andrew as a son of Johnathan, based largely on this census reading. If correct, it would mean that Alice was the daughter of Ellen’s half-brother, so she would be Anderson’s half-niece in law.

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Farmers precinct, p. 215B, lists as family #185:
Alfrey, Anderson, 55, farmer, b. Jun 1845; Ellen, 53, wife, b. Jan 1847; married 30 years, 10 children, 5 living; Lillie, 28, dau, b. May 1872, married 11 years, 5 children, 5 living; Pinkard, 24, son, b. Feb 1876, married 0 years; Josie, 13, dau, b. May 1887; Thomzie, 7, dau, b. Sep 1892; Roberts, Effie M., 10/12, g-dau, b. July 1899; Alfrey, Lula A., 19, d-in-law, b. Feb 1881. All born Ky Ky Ky.

(Lula is Pinkard’s wife. Lillie was married to John Roberts; I don’t know why she is listed her under her maiden name or where her other children are.)

1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Farmers precinct, enumerated 23 April, lists on p. 9A as family #159/165:
Alfrey, Ellen, 60, widowed, mother of 10 children, 5 living; Tomsie, dau, 17. Both born Ky Ky Ky.

The next household is headed by her son Pinkard.
