His gravestone has his date of birth as 15 Mar 1857, but the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses are all consistent with early 1858 or late 1857. (He was listed as 2 in 1860, 12 in 1870 and 22 in 1880.) So the year of birth on his gravestone may be in error.
