Charles may really be divorced already, and is at least separated. His mother Flora was also recorded in Sturgis, Michigan in 1930 with her second husband Frank Darby, and his sister Harriet reported in 1940 that she had been living there in 1935:

Adams Co., Indiana marriage licenses list the marriage on 11 Aug 1923 of Charles Petitt, born 2 April 1902 in Kentucky, parents John Petit and Flora Robins, to Margaret Uhrick, born 3 Nov 1901 in Adams Co., Indiana, daughter of L. M. Johnson and Effie Hammond. It is recorded as the first marriage for Charles and the second for Margaret.
The birthdate for Margaret is off by 3 or 4 years. She was listed as age 3 born Sep 1896 in the 1900 census, as age 12 in the 1910 census, and her first marriage was recorded in July 1913.

I cannot find Margaret and the children in the 1930 census. Charles was living in Sturgis, Michigan, listed as married, but they may have already been divorced. It is possible that Margaret had remarried, and the children were recorded under their stepfather’s surname. If so, it would be difficult to identify the family as the given names are not uncommon, and they moved around a lot.
