According to his nephew Raymond Jennings (son of Jesse), Silas was killed by a train as he was crossing the tracks to deliver bread to a grocery store.

His death certificate (Vol. 11, #05484) records Silas Jennings, age 26 years 8 months 3 days, born 3 July 1919 in Rowan Co., Ky, died 6 Mar 1946 in rural Bath Co., residence Clearfield, Rowan Co., married, husband of Elizabeth Jennings age 28, occupation truck driver delivering bread, father John Milt Jennings, mother’s maiden name Sarah Slusher, both born in Ky, cause of death struck by train at 1:20 pm, informant Mrs. Elizabeth Jennings, Clearfield, Ky.
