His obituary reported “Pastor Bert William McBrayer, Sr., age 98, of Bozeman, Montana, formerly of Morehead, Kentucky, died on Monday, April 12, 2010.

He was born October 12, 1911, in Rowan County, Kentucky, the son of the late Charles Henry and Mary Elizabeth Johnson McBrayer.

He was educated in the Poplar Grove and Oak Grove one-room schools where his father was the teacher. On May 11, 1929, he married Alta Lambert McBrayer, who preceded him in death on May 14, 1976. They had eight children. In 1979, Bert married Mary Reynolds Blair, who preceded him in death on March 6, 2005.

He farmed on Ditney Ridge during the 40’s and 50’s. Then he sold the farm and moved to Clearfield and went to work for Lee Clay Products. After Lee Clay closed, he worked for St. Claire Medical Center until his retirement at age 70.

He was ordained a minister in 1949 and began preaching by holding prayer meetings in homes. He also preached in various one-room schoolhouses before building a church on the CCC Trail near Ditney Ridge. In November 1961, he became pastor of the Elliottville Baptist Church and remained their pastor for 30 years until his retirement in 1991.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Arthur McBrayer, James Earl McBrayer, and Beecher McBrayer, and two sisters, Marie McBrayer and Irene Sargent.

He is survived by one brother, Herbert McBrayer of Lexington, Kentucky; and one sister, Thelma Bradley of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky; five sons, Lenvil McBrayer of Modesto, California, Richard McBrayer of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Emil McBrayer of Layton, Utah, Tim McBrayer of Enola, Pennsylvania, and Bert McBrayer, Jr. of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania; two daughters, Janet Dulin of Bozeman, Montana, and Naomi Sheaffer of Winchester, Virginia; two step-daughters, Bertalee Blair Thornsberry of Monroe, Ohio, and Rhonda Blair Davis of Paris, Kentucky; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven step-great grandch ildren; one step-great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son, Arthur McBrayer; one step-son, Verl Blair; and four granddaughters, Marie McBrayer, Lori Austin, Teresa McBrayer, and Sharon Charles.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tim Rhodes and the Rev. H. G. Pratt officiating. Burial will follow in McBrayer Cemetery.”

Bert McBrayer preached the funerals for my grandparents Truby and Florence (Hall) Petitt.
