Notes for Virginia Elizabeth Odessa Quesenberry
Past Images of Rowan County22 has a photograph of the family of Fielden Dalton and Odessa Quisenberry, including a Collie Quisenberry labelled as a brother of Odessa.

Her death certificate (Vol. 25, #12290) states Virginia Elizabeth Odessa Quisenberry Dalton, age 70 years 2 days, born 2 May 1873 in Virginia, died 4 May 1943 in Morehead, Rowan Co., Ky, father Claude Quisenberry, mother’s maiden name Rachael Hurst, both born in Virginia, married, husband Filden Dalton, cause of death malignant hypertension and heart disease.

She seems to have mostly gone by the names Billie and Odessa, and used Virginia Elizabeth as her “official” name. The marriage record says Virginia E., but most of the censuses say Odessa.

Most intriguing are the cemetery records. Next to Fielden Dalton’s single stone in Caudill Cemetery, there is a stone with the names Virginia Elizabeth Dalton and Billie Odessa Dalton. Under Virginia’s name are the dates 2 May 1873-4 May 1943, but there are no dates for Billie Odessa. Dewie Black’s survey of the cemetery lists it as a “double stone”, suggesting two burials, perhaps of a mother and young child, but the death certificate is fairly solid evidence that this represents a single grave, with two names for the same person.

Census
1900 census of Floyd Co., Virginia, Burks Fork district, enumerated 6 June, lists on p. 2A as family #20:
Dalton, Fielden, farmer, 23, b. Oct 1876; Virginia B.* O., 27, wife, b. May 1873, married 3 years, mother of 1 child, 1 living; Mallie C., 1, dau, b. Oct 1898. All born Va/Va/Va.

*This is one of those censuses where the enumerator put calculations like “3-1/P 3” in dark ink on top of the heads of household, obscuring the ends of the names. The first initial could be either B or D or O. It is not E, though. Of the three possibilities, B fits with the “Billie Odessa” on her gravestone.

1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Brushy Fork precinct, p. 260A, lists as family #90/91:
Dalton, Fielding, 33, general farming, married 14 years; Odessa, wife, 36, mother of 4 children, 4 living; Mallie C., dau, 11; Estill, son, 8; Clemma, son, 5; Vassie, dau, 2. All born Va Va Va.

1920 census of Rowan Co., Kentucky, Brushy Fork precinct, page 256A, lists as family #8:
Daulton, Fieldon, 43, Va Va Va, farming; Odessa, wife, 46, Va Va Va; Blakie E., son, 17, Va Va Va; Clemmie A., son, 15, Va Va Va; Vacie W., dau, 12, Va Va Va; Ola G., dau, 8, Va Va Va; Quesinberry, Collie, 24, brother-in-law, Va Va Va, farm laborer.

(Ola should be listed as born in Kentucky. Collie is probably the child listed as Chyle R, age 6 in the 1900 census of the James & Millie Dalton family.)

1930 census of Rowan Co., Kentucky, Pine Grove precinct, enumerated 24 Apr, lists on p. 6B as family #248:
Dalton, Fielding, farmer, 53, age at first marriage 20; Odessa, wife, 56, age at first marriage 23; Vasa U., dau, 22. All born Va/Va/Va.
