Notes for Zora Tilden Hall
His WWI draft registration card, issued in 1917/1918 (the images on Ancestry do not show the side of the card that has the date it was filed), says Zora Tilden Hall, age 38, residence Rodham, Ky, born 8 Oct 1879, occupation clay miner, employer Ky Fire Brick Co, nearest relative Elva Hall, wife.

His obituary in the Rowan County News of Jan 7, 1954 reported “Zora Tilden Hall, 75, of Hayes Crossing, died Sunday afternoon [Jan. 3, 1954] at the Chesapeake & Ohio Hospital in Huntington, following a brief illness from heart ailments. Mr. Hall was a retired C&O employee. During his later years of service with the railroad he operated the street signal crossing near Winchester. Son of the late Daniel Boone and Lydia Cornette Hall, he was born in Rowan County Oct. 8, 1879 and made his home in and near Morehead all his life. Funeral services were conducted yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon at the East End Church of God, of which he was a member, by Reverends Jake Plank and Ott Furish. Interment was in Lee Cemetery.

In January 1900 he married Elva Grace [other sources have Crace or Crose] and from this marriage two sons, Harold and Carl, both of Lexington, survive. Following the death of his first wife he married Bertha Puckett and they became the parents of 8 children of whom the following 5 survive: Holley C. and Daniel B. of Portsmouth, Walter and Curtis, RFD 2, Morehead, and Mrs. Chloe Marcum, Ft. Gay, W. Va. His second wife also preceded him in death and in 1945 Mr. Hall married Abbie Gail Carter, who survives. He also leaves two brothers, Allie and Frank of Fromburg, Montana, two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Sparks, RFD 2, Morehead, and Myrtle Hall, RFD 2, Morehead, 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.”

Judging by the official records, though (birth, marriage, census and death), Elva was the mother of most of the children attributed above to Bertha.
Notes for Elva Cordelia Crase
Most records for Elva herself give her maiden name as either Crose or Crace. Her father’s name is spelled consistently as Crase in his marriage record and in the 1850 through 1880 censuses, though, so that is the spelling I am using. Later records were probably influenced by the fact that the Crose name is common in Rowan and Morgan counties.

Her death certificate records Ella Cordelia Crose, age 34, born Oct 1885 in Ky, died 26 Feb 1919 in Rowan Co, Ky, married, father Jas. Crose, born in Ky, mother’s name blank, cause of death influenza and bronch pneumonia, informant Frank Hall, Eadston, Ky, burial in Lee Cemetery.

Her gravestone says Elva C. Hall, wife of Zora T. Hall, Oct 24, 1884 - Feb 28, 1919.

Census
1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 6 May, lists on p. 14B as family #261/263:
Hall, Zora, 28, laborer at lumber works; Elvie, wife, 24, first marriage for both, married 10 years, mother of 4 children, 4 living; Virgie G., dau, 9; Ollie C., son, 7; Chloe E., dau, 5; Walter, son, 2. All born Ky Ky Ky.

1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hogtown precinct, enumerated 14 Jan, llsts on p. 5B as family #90/94:
Hall, Dan, 66, widowed, farmer; Zora, son, 39, widowed; Chloe, (relationship blacked out), 14; Cleff, son, 16; Walter, son, 11; Curtis, son, 8; Burtrel, dau, 4 1/12. All born Ky Ky Ky.

The relationships for the last four children relate to Zora, not to Dan. Probably Chloe’s originally said granddau before being blacked out. The daughter Burtrel does not seem to fit the birth records.

See Zora’s second marriage for the 1930 census notes.
