Notes for Joseph Henry Sorrell
Although Joseph was living in Roane Co., West Virginia in 1910, he was killed in Rowan Co., Ky in 1912, by Marion Myers of Farmers.

Most of my information on the descendants of Joseph H. Sorrell and his two wives is from Angie Sorrell Turner, who has a Family Tree Maker web site at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/u/r/Angela-K-Turner/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0001.html.

His death certificate records Joe Henry Sorrell, age 48 years 8 months 3 days, born 20 April 1864 in Rowan Co., Ky, died 22 Dec 1912, married, occupation lumberman, father Isaac Sorrell, born in Bath Co., Ky, mother’s maiden name Mahala Bradshaw, born in Rowan Co., Ky, cause of death “he was shot through the left lung above nipple by Marion Myers Marshall of Farmers, Ky, and death was instantanious”, informant M. C. Sorrell, Farmers, Ky, burial in Slaty Point.
Census
1900 census of Farmers precinct, Rowan Co., Ky, enumerated 10 June, lists on p. 14B as family #245/246:
Sorrell, Joseph H., 36, b. Mar 1864, Ky/Ky/Ky; Laura H., wife, 23, b. June 1876, Va/Va/Va, married 9 years, mother of 5 children, 3 living; John H., son, 16, b. Apr 1884, Ky/Ky/Ky; Jennie L., dau, 13, b. May 1887, Ky/Ky/Ky; Bart W., son, 12, b. Jan 1888, Ky/Ky/Ky; Allie, son, 9, b. June 1890, Ky/Ky/Ky; Boyd, son, 5, b. Jan 1895, Ky/Ky/Va; Flora, dau, 3, b. May 1897, Ky/Ky/Va; Cordelia, dau, 1, b. May 1899, Ky/Ky/Va.

The birthdates on this census are mostly inconsistent with other records.

Allie’s death certificate and gravestone both list his date of birth as 9 Oct 1887, and his WW I draft card lists his birthdate as 9 Oct 1886. If Allie was born either of those dates, his sister Jennie/Genny cannot have been born in March 1887, which is halfway between Oct 1886 and Oct 1887.

Bart’s WWI draft card lists his birthdate as 28 Dec 1889, which would make him younger than Allie, not older.

So I am suspicious of the accuracy of all of these birthdates.

1910 census of Roane Co., West Virginia, Walton district, enumerated 27 April, lists on p. 8B as family #152:
Sorrell, Joseph H., 45, second marriage, b. Ky/Ky/Ky; Laura A., wife, 34, b. Va/Va/Va, first marriage, married 18 years, mother of 11 children, 3 living (!); Boyd, son, 15, b. Ky/Ky/Va; Frank, son, 9, b. Ky/Ky/Va; Mabel, daughter, 2, b. WV/Ky/Va.
Notes for Alice Reed
Her gravestone says Alice Sorrell, wife of J. H. Sorrel, May 29, 1861 - Feb 21, 1890
Census
In the 1880 census, Alice is listed as 18, living with Anderson Alfrey and Ellen Reed. (This census must have been taken early in the year, since she married in May 1880.) She is recorded as their sister-in-law, although she is really Ellen’s niece.
