Notes for Charles McClain
From the Military Pension Application of Charles McClain:

On this 12th day of April 1871 personally appeared before me JR Garrett, Clerk of the county Court a court of record within and for the County and state aforesaid, Charles McLane aged seventy five years, a resident of Montgomery County and state of Kentucky..............etc......"that he has been married but his wife is now dead-in fact he has been twice married and both wifes dead-the first one was named Comfort Sexton and the last-Nancy Fulks and he was married to the latter at Jos Nickells in Morgan Co., Ky etc..." "he enlisted at Martinsburg, Va on the ---- ---- of 1813 and went first to Norfolk, Va."

In support of this 1871 application, a John S. Beatty and Jas M. Walmsley testified to Charles' character. James Williams Sr and James Williams Jr., of Greenup Co., Ky also swore that Charles McClain was the person he claimed to be.

There is no death date for Charles in his Pension records, the only other item in the folder is that "he was a substitute for Samuel Mayner who had been drafted in the said Company and Regiment of Mounted Va Militia", "that he was drafted at Norfolk, Va., on or about ---May 1813. Enlisted again on April 19, 1814 and discharged August 3, 1814.

Census
1840 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists:
Charls McClain, 1 m 15-19; 1 m 40-49; 2 f < 5; 2 f 5-9; 1 f 10-14; 1 f 15-19; 1 f 40-49.

Neighbors are Thomas Wills and John Cox. Also on the same page are Comfort’s father John Sexton, living alone, age 60-69, and a William Sexton who is probably her brother (see his notes for details.)

1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists as family #815:
Charles McClain, 50, b. Va; Cumfort, 50, b. Ky; Elizabeth, 21, Ky; Cumfort, 19, Ky; Judy, 17, Ky; Mariah, 14, Ky; William, 10, Ky.

1860 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists in household #762:
Charles McClain, 70, b. Ky; Nancy, 65, b. Va; George Fultz, 23, b. Ky.

Notice that Charles has gone from 50 to 70 in 10 years. Nancy is also 19 years older than she was listed as in 1850 (see Notes for her son Calvin Fultz). Obviously the ages are rough approximations. For Charles, splitting the difference and going for a birthdate in 1795 matches the age he gave in his military pension application. For Nancy, the age she gave in 1850 is probably roughly correct.
Census Notes for Nancy [Fulks]
She was recorded as age 46 in 1850 and age 65 in 1860. If she is the same wife who was married to Jacob Fulks in the 1820 and 1830 censuses, then the age brackets suggest that the earlier date is more accurate.
Notes for Charles & Nancy (Family)
Morgan Co. marriage Book 1, p. 121, records Charles McClain m. Nancy Fulks on 16 Apr 1852, at house of Joseph Nickell, by Joseph Nickell, witnesses Abraham Spradlin and Rachel Nickell.

The identification of Charles’ wife as being the same widowed Nancy Fultz who was living with Calvin Fultz and Melvina (McClain) in 1850 is based mainly on that Nancy Fultz having a son George Fultz age 12 in 1850, while the Charles McClain family contains a George Fultz age 23 in 1860.
