Since the surname of Lewis is from the marriage record for a second marriage, it may be the name of her first husband. On the other hand, the license said the marriage was to be at the home of the bride, and the return said it took place at the home of Martha Lewis, so she may have been using her maiden name. I’ve noticed that was often done when the bride was young and her first marriage did not last long.

Rowan Co. marriage book 4, p. 26, records the marriage on 13 Apr 1901 of Robert E. Fraley, 21, residence Morehead, born and both parents born in Rowan Co., to Lorey Lewis, age blank, residence Morehead, born and both parents born in Rowan Co., marriage to be at the bride’s residence, at Martha Lewis’s by Samuel W. Nickell, witnesses A. M. Fraley and S. F. Clark, surety by A. W. Fraley. (The witness A. M. and the surety A. W. may be the same person. If so, the W is more likely to be correct because the bond form contained A. W.’s signature in his own hand, while the marriage return is filled out by the court clerk.)
