The Kentucky birth index lists Fola N. Hayes, born 7 April 1919 in Morgan Co., mother’s maiden name Ella Gross.

His middle name was recorded as Nanzo in the 1920 census, but it is probably really Nianza, after Ella’s younger brother Nianza Ison.

His obituary in the Morehead News reported:

“Fola N. Hayes, age 87, of Morehead, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2007, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. Born April 7, 1919, in Morgan County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Rufas Haskell and Ella Ison Hayes. His wife, Nola Marie Fouch Hayes, preceded him in death on July 19, 1992. Fola is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Linda Kay and Mike Neal of Morehead, Kentucky and two grandchildren, Christopher Neal and Scott Neal.

Mr. Hayes was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and a retired teacher, basketball coach, and businessman. A graduate of Morehead State Teachers College, Fola earned the bachelor’s degree in 1942 and the master’s in 1948 and was a teacher and basketball coach in both Montgomery County and Rowan County school systems. For many years, he was the owner of Fola N. Hayes and Associates in Nashville, Tennessee. He was President of the Morehead State University Alumni Association from 1954-58 and received the Morehead State University Distinguished Alumni Award in 1969. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at the First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Brian Farmer officiating; burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers will be Bill Fouch, Scott Neal, Christopher Neal, Don Lee, Mike Neal and Fred Ison. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Morehead State University Foundation Scholarship Fund.”
