Notes for China Partin (or Parton)
My only record of China’s name is from the marriage record of her son Charles Scott Petitt, which gives it as China Parton. I cannot find a match in the West Virginia records, though, neither censuses nor vital stats.

The given name China seems to run in the intermarried Partin and Turner families of Whitley, Knox, Bell counties in Kentucky, including (listed in birth date order):

- China A. Turner, born 4 Mar 1856 in Bell Co., died 11 Sep 1936 in Knox Co., d/o Joseph Turner and Rebecca Hoskins. She married William Frankin Partin (28 Oct 1846-1928).
- China Partin, born 15 Sep 1866 in Whitley Co., died 14 Feb 1944 in Bell Co., d/o John A. Partin and Elizabeth Mason. She married Mance Partin (1 Apr 1859 - 9 Apr 1928), s/o Elam Partin and Lucinda Hubbard.
- China Ellen Partin, born 5 Nov 1876 in Bell Co., died 2 Feb 1961 in Knox Co., daughter of John Thomas Partin and Mary J. Turner. She married William E. Warfield in 1899 in Knox Co., Kentucky.

There were also several China Partins in this clan born too late to be Charles’ mother, including one in 1899, one in 1909, and one in 1913. It is feasible that China Ellen Partin above previously married and quickly divorced Samuel Pettit, but it would be unusual for a baby to be raised by its father in those days. It is more likely that one of these Partin families had a daughter named China who was born in late 1880 to 1882 and died before 1900, and who therefore does not appear in any census.
Census Notes for Samuel & China (Family)
1900 census of Athens Co., Ohio, Trimble Twp., lists Samuel living with his sister Florence and her husband James Kidd:
bro-in-law, Petitt, Samuel, Jan 1854, 46, widowed, Ky Ky Ky; nephew Charles, Sep 1897, 2, WV Ky WV.

It appears that Samuel must have been widowed twice, and that Charles is a child of the second marriage. My reasons for believing this are (1) no wife is mentioned in the Sep 1896 deed signed by himself, his siblings and their spouses, and (2) if the 1880 Pike Co. Illinois reading is correct, then Mary Ellen McCann was born in Kentucky, not West Virginia.
