Notes for George F. & Lillie B. (Family)
Rowan Co. marriage book 2, p. 331, records the marriage on 21 Jul 1897 of Lily Fraley, 14, residence Morehead, born and both parents born in Rowan Co., to George F. Fouch, 18, residence Elliottsville, born and both parents born in Rowan Co., at the residence of the bride, bond surety by F. M. Fraley.

I am inferring that this marriage swiftly ended in divorce, because George remarried in Oct 1899, listing it as his second marriage, and when Lily married again in 1905, she was still using her maiden name, and recorded it as her first marriage. (As did Hettie Conn after marrying my great-grandfather Jessie Petitt when she was 14, divorcing him 2 years later, and remarrying to Charles Kegley. There are several other examples in this database where a second marriage was recorded as a first. It seems to have been a common practice for teenage brides whose first marriage failed to treat it as a non-event when marrying again.)
