Census Notes for William R. Wells
1870 census of Elliott Co., Ky, Newcombe Fork precinct, lists as family #75:
Wells, William, 23, farmer; Nancy, 21; John H., 2; America, 1. All born in Kentucky.

1880 census of Elliott Co., Ky, Little Fork precinct, lists as family #100:
Wells, Wm. R., 33, farmer, divorced, Ky Va Va; Sloas, Nancy V., 31, divorced, Ky Va Va; Wells, John H., 13, son; America Ann, 10, dau; Mary B., 8, dau; Norman, 4, son; Edward, 5/12, son.

1900 census of Rowan Co 144/145:
Wells, William R., 53, farmer, b. Sept 1846; Molllie A., wife, 25, b. Apr 1875, married 4 years, mother of 0 children; Kegley, Everet, border, 5, b. May 1895; Porter, Mintie, border, 14, b. Nov 1885; Slus, Eddie, border, 20, b. Feb 1880. All born Ky/Ky/Ky.

I suspect that Eddie Slus may be the son Edward listed in the 1880 census, and that he took his mother’s maiden name (Sloas) since William and Nancy divorced at his birth. Mintie Porter may be a sister or niece of Mollie. I have no clue on the parents of Everet Kegley. The next family was that of James “Henry” Kegley, who was also listed with a son Thomas Everet age 2 months.
Notes for Nancy Virginia Sloas
In an article about the Sloas family of Carter and Elliott counties on p. 118 of the History of Elliott Co., Vol. II, Nancy is listed as a daughter of Jesse Sloas and Mary Elizabeth McDavid.
