Kate has apparently mistaken the purpose of the fields and entered her own maiden name rather than that of Lem’s mother.

I cannot find him in the 1880 census. His father, Thomas, is listed with his parents as single, and his mother is listed with her parents as divorced, but William is with neither family. It is possible that his both of his reported birthdates (1876 on his draft card and 1878 on his death certificate) are incorrect, and that he was really born in 1880.
