The Kentucky birth index lists Gracie B. Jones, born 8 July 1920 in Bath Co., mother’s maiden name Alice Carter.

Her obituary in the Morehead News reported “Gracie B. Jones Cassity, age 90, of U.S. 60 West, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Monday, October 11, 2010, at the Life Care Center of Morehead.

    Born July 8, 1920, at Olympia, Kentucky, in Bath County, Gracie was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Alice Carter Jones. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Levi Jones and Joseph Harold Jones; one sister, Mae Montjoy; and one step granddaughter, Kelly Ison.

    Her husband, Ralph Cornette Cassity, whom she wed December 3, 1943, passed away February 15, 1990. 

    Mrs. Cassity is survived by one son, Jim Fred Cassity of Morehead, Kentucky; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Ray Ross of Morehead, Kentucky, and Mary and Michael Morphew of Lexington, Kentucky; one brother, Robert Jones of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Shelley Taliaferro, Sheryl Ortega, Marcus Morphew, and Matthew Morphew; two step grandchildren, Raymond Ross III, and Bradley Ross; and numerous great grandchildren. 

    A graduate of Morehead State University, Mrs. Cassity began her teaching career in Adams County, Ohio, and retired from Rowan County Schools where she taught 27 years at various levels, Grades 1 through 12. She was a member of local, state, and national education associations and was a former President and Secretary of the Local Association. Active on many committees, Mrs. Cassity helped organize and served as a member of the first Parent Teacher Site-based Council at Elliottville Elementary School. She was a former Girl Scout Leader and member of the Rowan County Woman’s Club until it dissolved.

    An active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for more than 50 years, Mrs. Cassity participated on several committees, was active in CWF, taught Sunday School classes, and was an Elder Emeritus.

    Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, October 14, 2010, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Pastor Molly Smothers officiating. Other participants were Dr. Jack Ellis, Diana Walke, and Mary Morphew. Burial was in Lee Cemetery.

    Pallbearers were her grandsons, great grandson Marco Ortega II, and Freddy White. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Mackey, Danny Norton III, and Elders of the First Christian Church.”
