The 1890 census of Union Civil War veterans lists Amaziah J. Thurber resident in Morehead precinct, Rowan Co., Ky, recording his service as a corporal in Company G of the 87th NY Infantry from 20 Nov 1861 to 30 Jan 1863, and as a private in Company K of the NY 188 Infantry, from 24 Sep 1864 to 4 July 1865.

His death certificate records Amazia J. Thurber, age 90 years 8 months 29 days, born 5 May 1841 in New York, died 4 Feb 1932 in Winchester, Clark Co., Kentucky, parents unknown, cause of death found dead in bed, organic heart, informant O. S. Hall, Winchester, Ky, burial in Morehead Cemetery.

His obituary in the Winchester Sun of Friday, Feb 5, 1932, reported
“UNION SOLDIER PASSES TO REST  -  Amaziah J. THURBER, Veteran of the Civil War, Dies at Home of Grandson Here

Amaziah J. THURBER, 91 years old, died suddenly Thursday noon at the home of his grandson, O. S. Hall, 126 South Maple street.

Mr. Thurber was a retired miner, and served with the Union army in the War Between the States.  He was a private in Company G, 87th Infantry and Company A, 188th Infantry of New York, of which state he was a native.  The deceased is survived only by his grandson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the Morehead Church of God by the pastor, Rev. T. F. Lyons.  Burial will follow in the Pine Hill cemetery.”
Census
1920 census of Osceola Co., Florida, enumerated 6 Jan, lists on p. 3A at 512 Connecticutt Ave, St. Cloud:
Thurber, Amaziah J., 78, divorced, b. New York U.S. U.S.; Thayer, Fred A., boarder, 76, widowed, b. Rhode Island.

There are no other family members in the county in 1920, but his daughter Aretta’s granddaughter Etta Frances Hall was born in St. Cloud in 1914, so his grandson William Clarence Hall had apparently been living there not long before.
Notes for Manerva H.
Her gravestone says Minerva H. Thurber, wife of A. J. Thurber, Aug 19, 1825 - June 16, 1905.

Her age was listed as 42 in the 1880 census, and as 73 born Aug 1826 in the 1900 census. Since it seems uncommon for a wife to be 15 years older than her husband, I am tentatively giving more weight to the 1880 census. I have not been able to find this family in the 1870 census to get another cross-check. Perhaps that was the year they moved from New York to Kentucky, and they got missed.
