Notes for James Welch
Don Nickell’s web site29 lists James Welch’s death as 1853 in Johnson County, but the birth of his granddaughter Amanda Nickells is recorded in Carter County birth records as being at the home of “Isabell Welch” in Carter Co., so he had probably already died by Sept 1852.
Census
The 1850 census of Johnson Co., Ky, lists as family #140:
Welch, James, 45, farmer; Isabella, 36; Eliza J., 20; Margaret, 18; Mary E., 16; Thomas, 13; James, 10; Peter, 7; William, 6; John, 3; Nancy K., 3/12. All are listed as born in Virginia, but I suspect that at least the younger children may have been born in Kentucky.
Notes for Isabelle Powers
Don Nickell’s web site29 lists Isabelle’s death date as 11 Feb 1850 in Johnson Co., but James and Isabelle were both recorded in the 1850 census of Johnson Co. (taken in July), and the births of Shelby’s daughters Amanda in 1852 and Nancy in 1854 were both recorded as taking place at the home of Isabelle Welch in Carter County. So it appears that she died after 1854, probably in Carter or Elliott county.
Notes for James & Isabelle (Family)
This family is in my database only to show the ancestry of Amanda Nickells who married Commodore Riddle (my GGG Uncle), so I am not entering any of their children except Margaret. There are more details on available on Don Nickell’s web site.29
