Notes for Sarah “Sally” Brown
Her birthdate is very approximate. She was recorded as 33 in 1850, 42 in 1860, 47 in 1870, and 64 in 1880, implying birth dates respectively of 1816-1817, 1817-1818, 1822-1823, and 1815-1816. Since her sister Mahala was recorded in the censuses as age 33 in 1850 and age 43 in 1860, it is not clear which of them is the older of the two. They could even be twins; Sarah and Mahala were names that were often paired.
Census Notes for John & Sarah “Sally” (Family)
1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists as household #203:
Ratliff, John, 24; Sarah, 33; James, 2; John, 4/12. All born in Ky.
(Living next door at household #204 is the widowed Judy Ratliff, age 63, probably John’s mother.)
