Lydia is both Moses’ mother-in-law and stepmother.

1870 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 6 July, lists on p. 13 as family #88:
Brown, Moses, 47, farmer; Miriam, 39, b. Ky; Lydia, 74, b. Va; Johnson, Mattby, 10, b. Ky; Eliza, 9, b. Ky.

“Mattby” and Eliza are children of Miriam’s brother Zachariah.

1880 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Brushy Fork precinct, enumerated 1 June, lists on p. 35 as family #259/304:
Brown, Moses, 58, farmer, b. Va Mass Mass; Mirra, 50, wife, b. Ky Ky Ky; Royse, Charles, 10, grandson, b. Ky Ky Ky.

The preceding household is that of Bazil Johnson with wife Susanna, and the following one is James K. Royse with wife Sabra. Charles Royse is their son, so he was not orphaned, just staying with his grandparents.
