Notes for James Americus & Effie Lee (Family)
Rowan Co. marriage book 5, p. 239 lists the marriage on 4 Jun 1905 of James M. Roberts, 24, farmer, residence Triplett, born Rowan Co., to Effie Stacy, 13, residence Triplett, born Rowan Co., parents born Fleming Co., at Gearhart by Bg James Riley, witnesses Geo Riley, John Fraley.

(The next record in the book is for Marion Roberts and Stella Carter on the same day.)

Before I got the ages and other details on this marriage, I had thought the groom was James M. Roberts the son of William Clark Roberts and Sarah Sorrel, but that James Roberts was born in 1871 and would have been 34 in 1905. James the son of Troy was born in 1881 and would have been 24. There is one problem, that the middle initial of James the son of Troy was A, not M. According to Lavetta Conner, a granddaughter of James and Effie’s daughter Addie, his middle name was Americus. Perhaps the clerk filling out the marriage license heard his middle name as Mericus.
