Notes for Cornelius Steagall
The following report, cited as being from John Allen Stegall, is attached to multiple family trees on Ancestry.com:

“Death was due to a fatal gunshot wound he suffered in a shootout on Brown Ridge in Elliott County, somewhere near where the Stegall-Coldspring Road takes off from Rt. 32. It is believed that his death was linked to Civil War activity, but the specific cause is not known. The shootout was waged during a very unusual weather condition-snow was falling and there were flashes of lightning, making it possible for the men involved to get brief glimpses of their opponents. Cornelius Steagall's body was not found until the next day. Older citizens told me that Elijah Pennington, Jr. always maintained that he fired the fatal shot, but under the conditions, that might be open to conjecture. I have been unable to locate Cornelius Steagall's place of burial. Although he died about two miles from two Steagall cemeteries, no one has been able to identify a specific grave as his.”
