His WW I draft registration card records Winfield Scott Sorrell, age 39, born 29 Aug 1879, residence Farmers, Rowan Co., Ky, occupation saw mill man, employer Thomas Hall Lumber Co., nearest relative Mrs. Fannie Sorrell, wife, same address.

The birthdate is off by one year - he was not listed in the 1880 census, taken in June, and the 1900 census gives his birthdate as Aug 1880.

His WW II draft registration card, filed 27 April 1942, records Winfield Scott Sorrell, age 61, residence 2030 Walnut St., New Castle, Indiana, born 19 Aug 1880 in Farmers, Rowan Co., Ky, unemployed, nearest relative Fanny Sorrell, same address, height 5’9”, weight 165 lbs, brown eyes, gray hair, dark complexion, third finger tip missing.

His obituary in the New Castle Courier Times reported:

“Winfield Scott Sorrell, 70, died Sunday evening (Dec. 26, 1950) at 10:30 o'clock at his home, 1906 Walnut St., following an illness of three months. Mr. Sorrell was born in Kentucky and had resided in this community for the past 31 years. He was a member of the Eagles lodge.

Surviving are the widow; Mrs. Fanny Sorrell; three daughters, Mrs. Eugene Alexander, Mrs. John Vannatta and Mrs. Edgar Mayfield, all of New Castle; four sons, Charles Sorrell, Clyde Sorrell and Woodrow Sorrell, all of New Castle and Wilford Sorrell of Spiceland; a sister, Mrs. Mary Dee Post of Morehead,KY,; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The body had been taken from the Butcher and Bentley funeral home to the residence where friends may call until 12:30 Wed. afternoon. The body will lie in state at the Church of God at Walnut and S. 18th St., an hour before the service which will be held at 2 o'clock with Rev. Luther Cantwell and Rev. Herman Asst officating. Burial will be in the South Mound cemetery.

The Eagles lodge will hold services this evening at 7 o'clock at the residence.”
