Notes for James & Nelly (Family)
I am only entering this family’s census notes to show the parentage of the James W. Simpson who married Mary J. Downing.
Census
1850 census of Greene Co., Tennessee, enumerated 21 Sep, lists on p. 358 as family #622/628:
James Simpson, 44, b. N.C.; Nelly, 46; William, 18; Thomas, 13; Nancy M., 10; James W., 8; William Simpson, 5. All except the elder James born in Tennessee.

William age 5 is probably a nephew or grandson.

1860 census of Grundy Co., Missouri, Liberty township, enumerated 23 July, lists on p. 124 as family #1030/888:
James Simpson, 54, farmer, b. N.C.; Rebecca, 49; Thos, 22; Nancy M., 20; James W., 17; Margaret, 14; Nancy A. Graham, 11. All except James born in Missouri.

Most likely Nancy Graham is a daughter of Rebecca and a previous husband. The next household is that of William Simpson age 28 with wife Mary E., age 22, born Ky, and children James A., 4, Charlotte, 3, and Nelly, 1. (Presumably named after William’s mother.)

1870 census of Grundy Co., Missouri, Liberty township, enumerated 9 August, lists on p. 10 as family #79/77:
Simpson, James, 64, farmer, b. S.C.; Rebecca, 59, b. Tenn; Samples, George, 12, b. Missouri.

The next two households are those of their son Thomas with wife Mary A., and son James with wife Mary J. (nee Downing).

In 1880 George Samples is living with James and Mary, listed as a nephew, which would make him a grandson of James Sr., but the only daughter they show in 1850 was Nancy, who was still single in 1860. Most likely they had an older daughter who was already married in 1850. They were listed on the same page with two Samples families in that year.
