Notes for Manoah W. & Virginia S. (Family)
This family is in my database because of their multiple ties to my Downings: their daughter Anna America married William Washington Downing, and their granddaughter Mary Alice Cleveland (daughter of Emma Jane) married William Thomas Downing, who was living with their son Miles A. Downing in the 1870 census.

1850 census of Lafayette Co., Missouri, Freedom township, enumerated 10 Oct, lists as family #1244:
Manoch W. Dyer, 41, farmer, b. Ky; Virginia S., 30, b. Ky; James D., 13, b. Ky; Miles A., 11, b. Ky; Jane, 9, b. Mo; Narciz, 7, b. Mo.
The family listing appears to be incomplete, judging by the next census. It should show Erasmus at 5, Fanny at 3, and Ann America at 1. They appear to be listed on Oct 30, in household 1414, as Rasmus Dyer, 5; Frances Dyer, 4; Ann A. Dyer, 1. All born in Mo. This “household” may really be a combination of people missed earlier, since it contains 28 people with 12 different surnames, but no change in family number.
1860 census of Lafayette Co., Missouri, Freedom township, enumerated 26 Aug, lists on p. 37 as family #51:
M. W. Dyre, 51, farmer, b. Ky; V. S. (f), 42, b. Ky; James, 23, b. Ky; Mary, 20, b. Mo; M. A., 21, b. Ky; Jane, 20, b. Mo; N. (f), 18, b. Mo; E. (m), 15, b. Mo; Fanny, 13, b. Mo; A. A. (f), 11, b. Mo; Mary, 9, b. Mo; Addie, 6, b. Mo.
Mary age 20 is probably James’ wife. Jane age 20 may also be an earlier wife of Miles, since Manoah and Virginia’s daughter Emma Jane is listed in Johnson Co. with her husband John W. Clevelend and their baby daughter. (Too bad the 1860 census doesn’t list relationships or marital status.)
1870 census of Lafayette Co., Missouri, Freedom township, enumerated 1 July, lists on p. 55 as family #351/358:
Dyer, Manoah W., 61, farmer, b. Ky; Virginia S., 52, b. Ky; Francis, 21 (male), b. Mo; Mary, 19, b. Mo; Ada, 17, b. Mo; Brummet, Joseph, 17, farm laborer, b. Mo.
Francis may be other than a son; there is no match in the 1860 census, and the age conflicts with that of their daughter Ann America, who was also listed as age 21 in 1870 (in Davis township with her husband Wm W. Downing.) Or it could be their daughter Fanny with her age off by two years and the gender incorrect.
The next household is that of James F. Downing age 23, son of John P. Downing, with wife Martha, and the one after that is John P. Downing age 43 with wife Elisa.
1880 census of Lafayette Co., Missouri, Freedom township, enumerated 14 June, lists on p. 18 as family #152:
