His obituary in the Rushville Republican of 18 June 1984 reported “Markes McClurg, 75, Carthage, died Saturday evening in Hancock County Hospital in Greenfield. Services are Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the John J. Todd Funeral Home in Carthage with Rev. Gene Lewis presiding. Visitation is Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial is in Carthage Town Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the American Lung Association.

He was born in Rowan County, Kentucky., March 31, 1909, to Lemuel and Sarah (Yates) McClurg. He married Mary Ellen Winkler June 22, 1935. She survives. He was retired in 1970 from Container Corporation of America after 43 years. He lived in the Carthage area for 69 years. He was a member of the Carthage Friends Church.

Survivors include two sons, Randy, Bloomington, and Gary, Greenfield; three sisters, Mary Gurley, Tempe, Arizona, Linda Smith, Santa Monica, CA and Mrs. Claude (Gladys) Butler, Raleigh; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, a brother and five sisters.”
