Census Notes for America Fielder
In the 1880 census she was listed as age 62, boarder, with her son Marshall.
Census Notes for James David & America (Family)
1850 census of Bath Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 9 Aug, lists on p. 53 as family #358:
James McCarty, 43, farmer; America, 30; Hannah, 20; Augustin, 18; Nancy, 16; Francis A. (f), 14; Andrew J., 12; Sanford, 9; James G., 8; Marshall, 6; America, 1/12; Elizabeth, 4. All born in Ky.

Hannah through Francis are children of James’ first marriage, to Maud Kerrick.

One thing curious about this census is that their daughter Mariah does not appear. In the 1860 census she is listed as age 18, falling between Andrew and Sanford in the birth order. So she may be a foster child. On the other hand, other records suggest that Sanford, James and Marshall were all younger than shown here, so it may be that the enumerator accidentally skipped Mariah, and shifted the ages downward. (The enumerators often took notes on cheap notebooks when making their circuits, and then transferred them in a neat hand to the official ledgers later. Errors could arise in the copying step.)

1860 census of Bath Co., Ky, Owingsville P.O., enumerated 19 June, lists on p. 60 as family #435:
James McCarty, 54, farmer; America, 38; Andrew J., 20; Mariah, 18; Sanford, 17; Elizabeth, 15; James W., 13; Marshal, 11; Elvira, 9; Thomas, 5; Evaline, 3. All born in Kentucky.

Many of the ages are significantly off from those implied by the 1850 census, especially those for James and Marshall, which show a five year discrepancy. Elizabeth has also moved in the birth order, from being younger than James and Marshall to being older.

1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, Mudlick preclnct, enumerated 6 Aug, lists on pp. 13-14 as family #93/95:
McCarty, James, 63, farmer; America, 52; Alvira, 18; Thomas, 13; Eveline, 12; Frances, 35; Rachel, 1. All born in Ky.

Frances is a daughter from James’ first marriage, to Maude Kerrick. Rachel is probably her daughter, but since the McCartys often married their cousins, it is unclear whether Frances is widowed or an unwed mother.

The preceding household is headed by James’ son Sanford, listed as age 27, and the one before that by his brother A. J. McCarty, listed as 53.
