The birth report to the Kentucky state auditor lists a male child with given name Gon Alpa born 20 Jan 1858 in Morgan Co., father William Walsh, mother’s maiden name M. Hampton. The comments column says “bastard al”.

His death certificate records Gon Walsh, age 74 years 2 months 24 days, born 20 Jan 1858 in Kentucky, died13 April 1932 in West Liberty, Morgan Co., Ky, farmer, married, husband of Mary Jane Walsh, father William Walsh, mother’s maiden name Malissa Hampton, both born in Ky, cause of death acidosia diabetic, informant Mrs. Floyd Arnett, West Liberty, Ky, burial in Salyer Cemetery.

I cannot find Gon as a baby in the 1860 census. He is not listed with his mother and her husband Hiram Spencer, nor with his father and Clarinda McKenzie. I also did a search on all infants age 2 or under in Morgan Co. The closest possibility is a John C. Walsh age 1 listed with Mary Walsh age 34. It is possible that “Gon Z” was misheard as John C, and that Mary is a relative of William’s who was caring for him.

Her death certificate records Mary Jane Walsh, age 82 years 9 months 27 days, born 17 April 1854 in Kentucky, died 13 Feb 1937 in Morgan Co., Ky, widow of Gon Walsh, father Beverly McClain, mother’s maiden name Lyde Day, both born in Kentucky, cause of death terminal pneumonia, informant Harlan McClain, West Liberty, Ky, burial in Salyers Cemetery.

1900 census of Morgan Co., Ky, West Liberty precinct, enumerated 9 June, lists on p. 6A as family #111/113:
Walsh, Sam, 41, b. Dec 1858, farmer; Mary J., wife, 46, b. Apr 1854; Josua, son, 16, b. May 1884; Clara, dau, 14, b. Dec 1885; Bevely, son, 13, b. May 1887; Liddie B., dau, 9, b. Aug 1893; Alwilda, dau, 3, b. Apr 1897. All born Ky Ky Ky.

His given name is definitely recorded as “Sam” - the first letter looks just like the relationship entries that say “Son”, and unlike the G’s in George and Garland on the same page, and there are three humps at the end.
