Notes for Drury “Drew” & Mary “Polly” (Family)
The main reason I filled out this whole family group is that Polly may turn out to be related to me on the Quesenberry side, if she is descended from one of the Pendleton men (Rice and Benjamin) who married two different Elizabeth Quesenberrys (aunt and niece).
Census
1840 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists:
Drury Evans: 1 male 40-49; 1 female 60-69; 1 female 20-29; 1 m 10-14; 1 m < 5; 1 f 10-14; 1 f < 5.

Drury is probably already married to Mary Pendleton here, with the children from his marriage to Hannah Middleton. (Mainly I make this judgment since there is no marriage record for Drury and Mary in Morgan Co., which there should be if he married her in 1841.) The woman in her 60’s would be his mother Ursley.

1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, enumerated 3 Sep, lists on p. 91 as family #586:
Drew Evans, 50, farmer, b. Va; Mary, 31, b. Ky; Susan, 7, b. Ky; William, 5, b. Ky; Milly, 3, b. Ky; Jamima, 1, b. Ky; Ursley Evans, 75, b. Va; Mary, 30, b. Va; Milly, 13, b. Ky.

1860 census of Morgan Co., Ky, district 1, West Liberty P.O., enumerated 2 July, lists on p. 45 as family #276/273:
Drura Evans, 60, farmer, b. Va; Mary, 30, b. Ky; Hugh, 21; Susan, 18; Mary, 15; William, 17; Gemimah, 13; Anderson, 5; Ulsey, 2; James Bowling, 21, laborer; Susanah Foster, 23. All except Drura born in Ky.

The daughter listed here as Mary is the same one listed as Milly age 3 in 1850 (note that she is out of age order.) Hugh is a son of Drury and his first wife Hannah Middleton; I do not know where he was living in 1850.

1870 census of Elliott Co., Ky, precinct 1, Sandy Hook P.O., enumerated 9 June, lists on p. 8 as family #42:
Evans, Drewry, 70, farmer, b. Va; Mary, 45, b. Ky; George, 18, farm hand; Cornelius, 14, works on farm; Preston, 9; Huston, 6; California, 4/12. All except Drewry born in Ky.

This is a list of children that does not match either the earlier censuses nor the 1880 one. However, the household preceding them, which is headed by Joel P. Adkins with wife Nancy, contains a child list that exactly matches what one would expect to see for Drew and Mary, and the 1860 census shows Joel and Nancy Adkins with sons George and Cornelius! So apparently somehow the census taker got the family heads swapped. Here is the so-called “Adkins” family:

1870 census of Elliott Co., Ky, precinct 1, Sandy Hook P.O., enumerated 9 June, lists on p. 8 as family #41:
Adkins, Joel P., 46, farmer; Nancy, 36; Hugh, 25; William, 24; Jamima, 22; Anderson, 15; Ursley, 13; Elcy, 9; Mary, 7; Martha, 7, twins. All born in Kentucky.

1880 census of Elliott Co., Ky, Martinsburg precinct, enumerated 8 June, lists on p. 12 as family #90:
Evans, Drury, 81, farmer, b. Va Va Va; Polly, 60, wife, b. Ky Ky Ky; Hugh, son, 35, b. Ky Va Ky; Elsey, dau, 21, b. Ky Va Ky; Mary, 16, dau, b. Ky Va Ky.
