Putnam Co., Indiana, birth book H-17, p. 131, records Earl Creed Davis, born 30 Oct 1920, father Moses Earl Davis, mother’s maiden name Mattie Opal Ferrand.

His obituary ran in the Greencastle Banner-Graphic on Wed, 8 Oct 2008:

Muncie, Ind. -- Earl C. Davis, 87, of Muncie, Indiana died peacefully Monday morning, October 6, 2008, at Westminster Village. He was born October 30, 1920, in Putnam County, Indiana, son of the late Moses E. and Mattie (Ferrand) Davis. He graduated from Bainbridge High School, Coombs Bible College, Butler University, and Christian Theological Seminary where he ultimately earned his doctorate in pastoral care and counseling.

Beginning with his ordination in 1941, Dr. Davis' pastoral career spanned over 60 years during which time he served various churches throughout Indiana including full-time pastorates in Christian churches at Plum Creek (Rush County), Union (Johnson County), Salem (Washington County), Yorktown (Delaware County), and North Salem (Hendricks County). He enjoyed collegial relationships within his professional community called the Academy of Parish Clergy for over 30 years, serving in numerous volunteer leadership roles, including Dean of the College Fellows for a two-year term.

He married Martha H. (Knetzer) and was her devoted husband for 66 years. He was an enthusiastic and doting father, as they were blessed with five children: Martha Sharon married to Marty Lang; Richard E. (deceased) married to Cindy (Jackley) Davis; Merribeth J. married to Earl Bruning; Gilbert K. married to Stacey (Lee) Davis; and, Wilbur R. married to Cindy A. (Porter) Davis. Earl took great delight in being surrounded by his family, and was further blessed with nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Dr. Davis was a prolific writer as well as pastor, publishing one book entitled, "God's Mighty Mountains," an anthology of his own sermons describing the significance of mountain experiences in the Bible. He also enjoyed writing biographical sketches, particularly focusing on his parents and his early upbringing in Montana, as well as several collections of inspirational resources with both humorous and poignant content. It was his joy to write and one of his enduring gifts to his family.

The funeral services will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, October 9, at Hazelwood Christian Church of Muncie with calling preceding the service beginning at 2 p.m. Rev. Colby Smith and Dr. David Cartwright will lead the memorial service. Porter Funeral Home of North Salem is coordinating the arrangements.
