Census Notes for Enoch & Mahala (Family)
1860 census of Floyd Co., Ky, Prestonburg P.O., enumerated 27 July, lists on p. 54 as family #352:
Enoch Thornsbery, 33, farmer; Mahala, 25, wife; Susan, 12; Elly, 8; Belly, 6; Louisa, 4; James, 1. All born in Ky.

This family is on lines 13-19. At the bottom of the page on line 40 is Simpson Thornsbery, age 2, after Wm Martin age 34, his wife Fanny age 36, and their daughter Elvira age 13. At the top of the next page are 5 children with ages 10 through 1, and no surname given. In the 1870 census of Floyd Co, these same 5 children are listed as Martins, with their father William and a wife Anna. It is possible that Simpson was briefly fostering with the Wm Martin family for some reason, but far more likely is that the census taker accidentally left him out when entering the Enoch Thornsberry family, and appended his name at the bottom of the page to correct the omission, without making a marginal note. (If he were really living with the Martins, one would expect him to be entered after all of their children, or at least in age order, rather than between the daughter age 13 and the son age 10.)

1870 census of Carter Co., Ky, precinct 6, Grayson P.O., enumerated 30 July, lists on p. 17 as family #110/103:
Thornsberry, Enock, 50, farmer; Mahala, 40; Susan, 23; Ellen, 21; Elizabeth, 17; Louisa, 15; Simpson, 12; James, 10; Austin, 8; Isaac, 7; William, 2. All born in Ky.

1880 census of Elliott Co., Ky, Newfoundland precinct, enumerated 30 June, lists on p. 5 as family #33:
Thornsberry, Enoch, 54, farmer, b. Va Va Va; Mahala, 50, wife, b. Ky Ky Ky; James, 19, son; Austin, 18, son; Isaac, 15 (or 13, but 15 is more consistent with other records), son; William, 11, son; John, 8, son. All sons born Ky Va Ky.
