Census Notes for Zachariah Richard Phelps
Zachariah was already married by the 1850 census, but he was living next door to his parents, and the names are so similar that I thought it was worthwhile making a note of them:
1850 census of Fleming Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 15 Aug, lists as family #68:
Zachariah Phelps, 71, farmer, b. Va; Martha, 61; Druzilla, 29; David L., 26; Minerva, 20; Mahaley, 17. All except Zachariah born in Kentucky.

Census Notes for Zachariah Richard & Martha (Family)
1850 census of Fleming Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 15 Aug, lists as family #69:
Zachariah R. Phelps, 24, farmer; Martha, 23; David L., 2; Zachariah R., 2/12. All born in Ky.
Ages are supposed to be reported as of June 1, which if followed correctly would mean that the baby was born in April 1850, but often ages were incorrectly reported as of the date of visitation.
The preceding household, presumably Zachariah’s parents, looks curiously similar to his own in the naming pattern. Perhaps Z. R. took the coincidence of his wife’s name being the same as his mother’s, and his own the same as his father’s, as a sign that he should try to name his children the same as his siblings.
1860 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 14 Aug, lists on p. 42 as family #322/326:
Z. R. Phelps, 34, farmer; Martha, 32; D. L., 12; Z. R., 11; Mary, 9; Mahala J., 7; Nancy, 5. All born in Ky.
According to her birth record, Nancy should be only 3, so the other children may also really be younger than reported here. I do not know where the daughter listed in the birth records as born 16 Sep 1859, and in the 1870 census as Louisa age 12, is in this census year. Perhaps the enumerator just accidentally left her off.
The preceding household is Z. R.’s brother D. L., listed as age 36, and the following household is his sister Druzilla Phelps, listed as a farmer, age 38, living alone. (Or perhaps she is a widowed sister-in-law, but at any rate, she was listed with Z. R.’s parents in 1850 as age 29. The 1850 and 1860 censuses do not record marital status.)

Phelps, Richd Z., 45, farmer; Martha, 42, cannot write; Rhodes, 20; Mary, 18; Mahala, 16; Nancy, 14; Louisa, 12; Kate, 10; Martha, 7; Louvinia, 3; Kissick, Elizabeth, 80, cannot read or write. All born in Kentucky.
