Notes for Mary J. Lykes
Her gravestone says Mary J. Cooper, wife of G. W. Cooper, 1822 - Sep 1888.

Census records, though, are more consistent with a birthdate in 1823 or 1824.
Census Notes for George W. & Mary J. (Family)
1850 census of Fleming Co., Ky, division 2, enumerated 22 Aug (ages reported as 1 June), lists on p. 29 as family #200:
George W. Cooper, 28, farmer; Mary, 27; John F., 4; Virginia M., 2; Malikiah, 4/12. All born in Ky.

1860 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead P.O., enumerated 1 Aug, lists on p. 33 as family #245/250:
G. W. Cooper, 37; Mary, 36; Virginia M., 12; Malinda, 10; Sarah E., 7; Doctor F., 5; James W., 2; Thomas M., 2/12, b. March. All born in Kentucky.

The daughter Malinda should be a son Malachi. Probably the census taker misread his own notes.

1870 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 6 July, lists on p. 12 as family #76:
Cooper, George W, 48, farmer; Mary, 47; Malachi, 20; Sarah, 18; Franklin, 16; James, 14; Thomas, 12; Francis, 7 (f). All born Ky Ky Ky.

The following household is headed by George Cooper Jr., age 30, with wife Annie, and the one after that by William Cooper, age 40, with wife Huldah, and the one after that by Charles Cooper, age 28, with wife Amanda, and at the bottom of the page is Fielding Cooper, age 34, with wife Nancy.

1880 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Brushy Fork precinct, enumerated 1 June, lists on p. 32 as family #240/283:
Cooper, George, 58, farmer, b. Ky Tenn Va; Mary, 56, wife, b. Ky Va Ireland; Cooper, Frank, 21, son, single, b. Ky Ky Ky; Francis, 17, dau, b. Ky Ky Ky; Swim, William, 11, grandson, b. Ky Ky Ky; Emaline, 8, granddau, b. Ky Ky Ky.

The presence of the single son Frank age 21 is strange, because two households above is the family of Frank Cooper, age 25, with wife Lydia age 22, and two children, who is a better fit agewise with the son listed as Doctor F. age 5 in 1860 and Franklin age 16 in 1870, and whose death certificate gave his parents as George W. Cooper and Mary Lyks. The only explanation I can think of is that George and Mary reported Frank as part of their household anyway, even though he was no longer really living with them.
