His obituary in the Morehead News reported

“Earl L. Black, Sr., age 83, of Enon, Ohio, passed away Saturday, August 26, 2006 in the Community Hospital, Springfield, after a long and courageous battle with COPD.

He was born February 16, 1923 in Craney, Kentucky, the son of the late Silas Bernard and Mary E. (Smedley) Black. Earl served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Following his service to his country he resided in Indianapolis where he served on city council and was a candidate for mayor. While living there he owned and operated Black’s Television and Radio Service and served as a volunteer fireman and civil defenseman. He relocated to this area and was employed as an electrical engineer with the U.S. Government in civil service at Wright-Patterson AFB, retiring in 1986 after 25 years of service. He then followed with employment as a locksmith as the owner of B & B Lock and Key. He was a member of Pete Road Baptist Church and his hobbies included being a HAM Radio Operator.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Kathleen; two sons, Earl Leo “Skip” Black of California, William Jaye Black, and wife Julia of Springfield; three daughters, Pamela Kay Stathopoulos of Nevada, Melissa Hope Morrish, and husband Carter of Texas, Laura Jean Nathaniel of Springfield; six grandchildren, Robbie, Megan, Jacob, Jennifer, Katie, Chase; two great--grandchildren, Hailey, Cody; a brother, John Paul Black, and wife Wanda of Huber Heights; as well numerous nieces, nephews, his church family, and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at 12:00 Noon, Pastor Joe Holliday and Pastor Clyde Bowen officiating. Interment with military honors followed in the Valley View Memorial Gardens, Xenia.”
