His obituary reported “Vernon Delano Pettit of Johnson School Road in Grange City, Kentucky, passed away at his home on Saturday, November 14, 2009, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was born on January 9, 1934, in Fleming County, Kentucky, to the late James Tobe and Amanda Helen Bradshaw Pettit.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ersie Burton Pettit; one son, L. D. (Barb) Pettit of Grange City, KY; and two daughters, Bernetta (Larry) Catching, of London, KY and Rhonda (Randy) Hawkins of Grange City, KY; four grandchildren, Brad (Mary Jane) Pettit, Kelly Pettit, Adam (Michele) Hawkins, Amy Hawkins; and one great-granddaughter, Laura Pettit.

He is also survived by one brother, Emerson Pettit, of Jamestown, OH; two sisters, Lovell Caudill of Grange City, KY and Nellie Taylor of Flemingsburg, KY. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert Pettit, Leon Pettit, and Bob Pettit, and one sister, Madge Wakely. 

He was a retired Fleming County school bus driver, a lifelong farmer, and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of the Johnson First Church of God.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Monday, November 16, 2009, at the Hutton Funeral Home in Hillsboro The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 17, 2009, in the chapel of Hutton Funeral Home with Bro. Vernon Gross and Bro. Billie Wagoner officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery. 

Pallbearers will be Bill Gross, Bob Flora, Scotty Dailey, Monty Jent, Jamie Hawkins, Bill Adams, Ricky Lewis, Paul Taylor, Rick Maze, Gerald Dyer, Dennie Adams, Glen Burriss, and Danny Jent.

Honorary pallbearers will be Orville Anderson, Emery Caudill, Ford Hinton, Jimmy Gooding and Mike Vise.”

“Ersie Burton Pettit, age 78, of Grange City, Kentucky, passed away Monday, February 27, 2012, at her home.

She was born on January 2, 1934, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, to the late Lucian and Audra Adams Burton. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Vernon D. Pettit, who died November 14, 2009.

Ersie is survived by one son, L. D. (Barb) Pettit of Grange City, Kentucky; two daughters, Bernetta (Larry) Catching, of London, Kentucky and Rhonda (Randy) Hawkins of Grange City, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Brad (Mary Jane) Pettit, Kelly Pettit, Adam (Michele) Hawkins, Amy (Josh) Konopka; and two great-grandchildren, Laura Pettit and Clay Hawkins.

She is also survived by one sister, Christine Moore of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, and four brothers Carson Burton and Phillip Burton, both of Manchester, Ohio, and Marvin Burton and Larry Burton, both of Ewing, Kentucky.

She was retired from U.S. Shoe in Flemingsburg and was a member of the Johnson First Church of God.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2012, in the chapel of Hutton Funeral Home with Bro. Vernon Gross and Bro. Billie Wagoner officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Bobby Flora, Bill Gross, Bill Adams, Jamie Hawkins, Ricky Lewis, Monty Jent, Denny Adams, Mike Kissick, David Jent, and Richard Engle.

Honorary pallbearers: Lisa Berry, Connie Stacy, Lisa Vise, Teresa Himes, and Kristie Kersey.

Visitation will be after 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at the Hutton Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
