James was raised by his aunt and uncle, and took their surname, but was never officially adopted.

He was listed in the 1900 census as age 11, born March 1889, and in the 1920 census as age 30.

His WW I draft registration card, filed 5 June 1917, records James Johnson, age 30, residence Christy, Rowan Co., Ky, born 25 Mar 1887 in Ordinary, Ky, occupation farming and constable, married supporting a wife and one child.

His death certificate records James Johnson, age about 33, birthdate unknown exactly, died 21 Feb 1926 in Rowan Co., Ky, married, father Jackson Nickell, mother’s maiden name Lizzie Goodman, both born in Ky, cause of death pistol wound in the hands of another party died instantly, informant Lillie Johnson, Vale, Ky, burial in Johnson Cemetery.

Lizzie Goodman was the youngest sister of Mary Goodman Johnson.
