Notes for Rufus Adkins
His death certificate records Mr. Rufus Adkins, age 100 years 7 months 17 days, born 1 Mar 1847 in Boyd Co., Kentucky, died 18 Oct 1947 in South Point, Lawrence Co., Ohio, widowed, late wife Relda Adkins, occupation retired miner & farmer, father Chas Adkins, born in Kentucky, mother’s maiden name unknown, cause of death broncho pneumonia, informant Mrs. Sarah Stevens, South Point, Ohio, burial in Caroline Cemetery, Greenup, Ky.

The informant is the wife of his foster son Ellis. The age is very likely incorrect; all of the censuses from 1900 through 1940 record him with an implied birth date of 1851 to 1853.

Be careful not to confuse him with Rufus Adkins, son of Frederick and Susanna Adkins, born about 1849 in Morgan Co., Ky, who died in 1925 in Greenup Co., Ky.
Census
In 1930 he was recorded in Lawrence Co., Ohio with his foster son Ellis Stevens as Rufus Adkins, stepfather, 79, widowed. (Ellis is probably really a son of one of Rufus’s stepsons, so the proper relationship would be stepgrandfather, but I do not know which one.)
Notes for Annis Binion
Her death certificate records Annis Adkins, age 78 years 5 months 10 days, born 28 Feb 1850 in Ky, died 8 Aug 1928 in Greenup Co., Ky, married, wife of Rufus Adkins, father James Binion, mother’s maiden name Matilda Barker, both born in Ky, cause of death senility, informant William Himes, burial in Caroline Cemetery.
Census Notes for Rufus & Annis (Family)
1900 census of Mingo Co., West Virginia, Magnolia district, enumerated 8 June, lists on p. 13B as family #256/259:
Adkins, Rufus, 49, b. Feb 1851, Ky Ky Ky, coal miner; Annis, wife, 51, b. Feb 1849, Ky Tenn Ky, married 14 years, mother of 5 children, 5 living; Albert H., son, 16, b. Feb 1884, Ky Ky Ky, coal miner; Ellis, George, grandson, 7, b. March 1893, Ky Ky Ky; Damron, Walter, boarder, 26, b. Oct 1873, Ky Ky Ky, coal miner.

1910 census of Greenup Co., Ky, district 8, enumerated 25 April, lists on p. 5A as family #82/83:
Adkins, Rufus, 58, farmer; Annis, wife, 60, second marriage for both, married 20 years, mother of 5 children, 5 living; Ellis, son, 17. All born Ky Ky Ky.

Ellis is actually a Stephens/Stevens. See the 1920 and 1930 censuses. He is probably also the grandson listed as George Ellis age 7 in the 1900 census; it is likely that his full name was George Ellis Stephens or Ellis George Stephens, and the census taker in 1900 misunderstood the middle name as a surname.

1920 census of Greenup Co., Ky, Russell precinct, enumerated 15 Jan, lists on p. 8A as family #136/137:
Adkins, Rufus, 67, b. Ky Ky Ky, coal miner; Annis, wife, 69, b. Ky Ky Ky; Magie V., adopted, 7, b. WVa Ky Ky.

Rufus was also recorded in 1920 (on Jan 29) in Mingo Co., WV, with Ellis Stephens as Adkins, Rufus, boarder, 68, married, b. Ky Ky Ky, coal miner.
