His death certificate records James Edmond Kelly, age 69 years 7 months, born 1 Mar 1851 in Ky, single, father John Edmond, b. N.C., mother’s maiden name Nancy Whitt, born in Ky, cause of death “I did not treat him he had no doctor I think from they say was heart troble he died suddently”, informant Z Edmond, Haldeman, Ky, burial in Hamilton Cemetery.

The surname Kelly is written in a lighter and more slanted hand, presumably a later correction. So Edmund should not be interpreted as the middle name of his father, and may also not be the last name of the informant. Whoever was initially filling out the form apparently misunderstood his middle name as being his surname, and therefore carried it down to the other family members.

Since his older brother Hezekiah was born in June 1850, and James was listed as age 7 in the 1860 census (with Hezekiah listed as 9), it is probable that the birthdate reported in this death certificate is off by one year and he was really born in 1852.

His gravestone says James E. Kelly, March 22, 1852 - May 11, 1920, and is next to a stone that says Hannah Kelly, Oct 14, 1862 - Feb 18, 1892, wife of James E. Kelly.
