Census Notes for Jefferson W. & Serena Phereby (Family)
1880 census of Carroll Co., Virginia, Pine Creek district, enumerated 10 June, lists on p. 16 as family #137/144:
Cox, J. W., 23, farming; Reana, 23, wife; Wm Alexander, 4, son; Mary Emma, 2, dau; Floyd A., 22, brother, farm hand, b. Ohio Ohio Ohio. The birthplaces for every one else are listed as Va Va Va, which is not consistent with Floyd being J. W.’s brother.

The next household is that of Leathan Collins age 65 with wife Nancy age 8, and the one after that is J. W.’s mother Elizabeth with her second husband F. M. Collins.

1900 census of Carroll Co., Virginia, Pine Creek district, enumerated 11 June, lists on p. 9B as family #113/114:
Cox, Jefferson W., 45, b. Mar 1855, Va Va Va, farmer; Pherebey, wife, 44, b. Apr 1856, married 25 years, mother of 5 children, 4 living; James J., son, 18, b. Sep 1881; Chap C., son, 17, b. Nov 1878, Va Va Va, married 1 year, mother of 1 child, 1 living. (But no child listed.)

Nancy’s surname should be Collins, not Cox, and the relationship should be mother-in-law. She was also the mother of 8 children, 2 living. See 1910 census, below, which has the correct data.

1910 census of Carroll Co., Virginia, Pine Creek district, enumerated 29 April, lists on p. 11B as family #184/185:
Cox, Jefferson W., 55, b. Va Va Va; Ferby S., wife, 54, b. Va Va Va (should be Va Va NC); Chap C., son, 27, b. Va Va Va; Collins, Nancy, 81, mother-in-law, widowed, mother of 8 children, 2 living, b. NC NC NC.

Nancy is Serena’s mother, the widow of first Alexander Bond and second Leathan Collins. (Jefferson W. Cox was recorded as the informant and identified as stepson on Leathan Collin’s death certificate in 1895, although he was really a stepson-in-law. Leathan Collins may have also been a brother of Jefferson’s stepfather Francis Marion Collins.) Her two living children in 1910 were Phereby, by Alexander Bond, and Cordelia Francis Collins, by F. M. Collins, who married Lafayette Slusher.
