Notes for David H. Evans
Register F, p. 1710, of the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Dayton, Ohio, records as resident #44309 David H. Evans, enlisted as a private on May 6, 1898 at Lexington, Ky, Co. C, 2nd Ky Infantry, discharged on Oct 31, 1898 at Lexington, Ky, cause of discharge E.T.S. (expired term of service?), domestic history born in Kentucky, age 52 (this is apparently his age at first admittance to the home), height 5-7, eyes brown, hair gray, can read and write, religion Protestant, occupation carpenter, residence subsequent to discharge Salt Lick, Ky, marital status divorced, nearest relative brother, Eddy Lee Evans, Salt Lick, Ky.

The history of his residency in the home is very interrupted, each time (before the last) ending in a discharge at his request. The periods were from 10 Nov 1921 to 12 Sep 1922, from 8 Aug 1924 to 9 Oct 1924, from 2 Oct 1925 to 13 Nov 1925, from 3 Dec 1925 to 27 Dec 1925, from 5 Feb 1926 to 24 Feb 1926, fom 28 July 1926 to 11 Dec 1926, and from 3 Dec 1928 until his death on 20 Jan 1929.

The record does not indicate the cause of death. It says that his body was shipped to Farmers, Ky, and that his personal effects were sent to his sister, unnamed.

The column for nearest relative, underneath the name for his brother Eddy Lee Evans, also says Dr. Thomas A. E. Evans, Farmers, Ky.

Thomas A. E. Evans was a son of Rolly M. Evans Jr., and thus was only a second cousin of David. His wife Mary Peachie Evans was David’s first cousin. But most likely he was listed as a contact due to being David’s doctor in Kentucky.
Notes for Emily “Emma” A. Crose
Her death certificate records Mrs. Emma Crose, age 73 years 6 months, born 7 Sep 1866 in Morgan Co., Ky, died 29 May 1939 in Levee, Montgomery Co., Kentucky, widowed, father Adam Crose, mother’s maiden name Lucinda Link, both born in Va, cause of death cancer of liver, informant Jeff Greenwade, Mt. Sterling, Ky, burial in Mt. Sterling, Ky.

The reported birthdate is probably off by a year; she was listed as age 2 in the 1870 census (with a sister age 4), and as age 11 in the 1880 census. So 1867 or 1868 is more likely than 1866.

The informant Jeff Greenwade is presumably a relative of the Peter Greenwade for whom Emma was working as a live-in servant in 1920 and 1930, but I cannot find him in the censuses. He may have usually gone by another given name.
Census
She appears with her parents in Rowan Co. in the 1870 census as Emily, age 2, in 1880 as Emily A., age 11, and in 1900 as Emma, age 25, born Feb 1875, single, although she was really divorced. The birthdate in the 1900 census should not be given any credence; it is wrong for nearly everyone.3

In 1910 she is listed in Sharpsburg, Bath Co., Ky as Emma Crose, servant, age 40, widowed, with the family of John E. Ramey, age 45, (son of Newton Ramey) and his wife Ollie (nee Coons), age 42. The number of children columns are blank.

In 1920 she is listed in Spencer precinct, Montgomery Co., Ky, as Emma A. Crose, servant, 51, single, with the family of Peter Greenwade, age 72, and his wife Molley (nee Ramey), age 70. Molly was an aunt of the John E. Ramey that Emma was working for in 1910.

In 1930 she is still living in Montgomery Co. with Peter and Molly Greenwade, this time listed as Emma Crose, boarder, age 58, single, cook for private family.
Notes for David H. & Emily “Emma” A. (Family)
Rowan Co., Ky marriage register A, p. 29, records the marriage on 13 Mar 1890 of D. H. Evans and Emma A. Crose.

David’s record at the Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers gave his marital status at the time of his admittance in 1921 as divorced.
Census
David and Emily/Emma do not appear in any census together because they divorced before 1900, no known children. Emma never remarried; in all the later censuses her surname is Crose and she gives her marital status as either single or widowed. The absence of children and the return to her maiden name suggests that the marriage was very brief.
