Notes for Samuel Purvis
The 1900 census listed Samuel’s birthdate as Sep 1828, but other records are suggestive of an earlier date, about 1825 or 1826.
Census
1850 census of Bath Co., Ky, district 1, enumerated 20 Sep, lists on pp. 116 as family #854:
Samuel Purvis Jr., 24; Cyntha A., 23; Allen, 3; Thomas F., 11/12.

The preceding household is headed by Samuel Purvis age 40 and his wife Nancy Rutherford.

1860 census of Bath Co., Ky, Owingsville P.O., enumerated 14 July, lists on p. 118 as family #852:
William Pervis, 24, farmer; Martha, 21; Margaret, 2; Saml Pervis, 30, farmer; Cynthia, 30; Allen, 13; Thomas, 11; Rachel, 8; Mary, 6; Charles, 2; Samuel, 1. All born in Kentucky.

William is the son of John Purvis and Margaret Proctor, and is thus Cynthia’s half-brother.

1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, White Sulphur precinct, enumerated 9 June, lists on p. 14 as family #96:
Purvis, Saml, 45, farmer; Racheal, 19; Mary, 17; Charles, 15; Saml, 13; Ann A., 10; Elizabeth, 4; Thomas, 2.

From Thomas’s death certificate, the mother of Elizabeth and Thomas is Alsey Jane Tincher, who married Samuel Purvis in 1865. It seems strange that Samuel would name two sons born 18 years apart both Thomas Franklin Purvis, but perhaps since the older one ended up going by Frank, he wanted to make sure that he had a son who used the name Thomas.

1880 census of Bath Co., Ky, Wyoming precinct, enumerated 2 June, lists on p. 2 as family #11/12:
Purvis, Samuel, 55, farming, b. Ky Va Ky; Elizabeth A., 48, wife, b. Ky Va Tenn; Rachel J., 28, dau; Elizabeth C., 14, dau; Thomas, 12, son; John L., 10, son. All children born Ky Ky Ky.

1900 census of Bath Co., Ky, Wyoming precinct, enumerated 5 June, lists on p. 3A as family #44:
Purvis, Samuel, 71, b. Sep 1828, Ky Va Ky, farmer; Margaret A., wife, 39, b. Apr 1861, Ky Ky Ky, married 6 years, mother of 2 children, 2 living; William C., son, 5, b. April 1895, Ky Ky Ky; Myrtle, dau, 3, b. March 1897, Ky Ky Ky.

The next two families are headed by Obe Purvis age 22, and Frank Purvis age 55. Frank is Samuel’s son from his marriage to Cynthia Purvis, and Obe is Frank’s son.
Notes for Samuel & Alsey Jane (Family)
Bath Co., Ky marriage records list the marriage of Samuel Purvis and Jane Tincher on 7 Aug 1865.

Identification of Jane’s husband as being the same Samuel Purvis who was married to Cynthia Purvis is based on the death certificate of Thomas Franklin Purvis born in 1867, which gave his parents as Samuel Purvis and Jane Tincher. That Thomas Franklin Purvis was living with this Samuel Purvis in the 1870 and 1880 censuses, with his relationship in 1880 recorded as son.

It is somewhat strange that Samuel named two sons Thomas Franklin Purvis when the older one was stil living, but since the older one ended up going by Frank, he may have felt it was not redundant to have a son who would actually go by Thomas, as this one did.

This suggests that the middle name of Samuel’s father was probably also Franklin, although I have no direct evidence of that.
