Notes for Mary “Polly” Ward
Her gravestone, an old hand engraved one, is inscribed POLLOY WIFE OF JAMES LAWSON BORN JAN 29 1804 DIED FEB 7 1880. She is recorded in the 1880 census, though, taken in June, with her son John, as Mary Lawson, age 76, mother, widowed, b. Ky NC NC. So either the death date on the stone is wrong, or she was incorrectly listed with her son after her death.
Census Notes for James P. & Mary “Polly” (Family)
1850 census of Montgomery Co., Ky, district 2, enumerated 5 June, lists on pp. 27-28 as family #177:
Lawson, James Jr, 62, b. Va; Mary, 46, b. Ky; F. G. S. (male), 15; Cythia, 13; Nancy, 10; Henry, 8; John, 8; Jerry, 6; George W., 4. All children born in Kentucky.

1860 census of Carter Co., Ky, Bruin P.O., enumerated 22 Aug, lists on p. 199 as family #1429/1313:
Jas Lawson, 65, farmer; Mary, 55; John, 19; Jeremiah, 16; G. W., 15. All listed as born in Kentucky, although that conflicts with other records that James was born in Virgina.

The following household is headed by Henry Lawson age 19 with wife Elizabeth age 16, presumably the son listed as Henry age 8 in 1850. The four households after that are all headed by Sparks families.

(Bruin was in the part of Carter Co. that became part of Elliott Co. when it was formed in 1969.)
