Notes for Richard Williams
Morgan Co., Ky deaths report for 1877 lists Richard Williams, age 53, died 10 Jan 1877, parents Thornton and Jane Williams.
Census
1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, enumerated 31 Aug, lists on p. 82 as family #533:
Jane Williams, 57; Nancy, 34; Richard, 23; Haden, 22; Amanda, 21; Daniel, 17; Ambrose, 15. All born in Kentucky.
Notes for Richard & Mary Jane Gordon (Family)
Morgan Co., Ky marriage records list the marriage on 16 July 1855 of Richard Williams, age 28, born in Morgan Co., to Jane Gordon Gray, age 21, born in Floyd Co., both residents of Morgan Co., by John Williams, witnesses Jilson T. Day, Edward Williams and Ambrose Williams.

The name “Jane Gordon Gray” sounds like it might be the second marriage of a Jane Gordon previously married to a Gray, but the birth and death records for their children are consistent in reporting Gray as her maiden name. The birth record of their oldest son William in 1856 reports it as Mary Jane Gray, and the birth record for their youngest daughter Alwilda in 1876 reports it as just Gray (that year’s report does not mention the given name for the mothers), which ties together the census records listing Richard’s wife as Jane in 1860 and Mary in 1870.
Census
1860 census of Morgan Co., Ky, district 1, West Liberty P.O., enumerated 19 June, lists on p. 30 as family #187/185:
Richard Williams, 34, farmer; Jane, 24; William M., 3; Ginger (male), 2; Rose, 1/12; James H., 28; Nancy, 43. Terry A. Watson, 55. All born in Kentucky.

Nancy and James are Richard’s sister and brother (see the 1850 census.) There is an annotation for Nancy in the “whether deaf, dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper or convict” column that says “idiot”. I do not know the connection of Terry Watson to this family.

1870 census of Morgan Co., Ky, River precinct, West Liberty P.O., enumerated 6 July, lists on p. 2 as family #9:
Williams, Richard, 46, farmer; Mary, 35; Wm M., 13; Danl B., 11; Barbara E., 9; Sarah J., 7; Preston H., 5; Athea A., 3; Mary S., 2; Hayden, 37; Nancy, 55. All born in Kentucky.

Daniel B. is apparently the child listed as Ginger in 1860. Barbara is most likely the daughter recorded as Rose age 1 month in 1860, although it is possible that Rose died young, and Barbara was born in 1861. But that would make the birth spacing very tight. Note that Sarah is recorded as 7 here, when other records suggest she was born in April 1862, and therefore would be 8, and similarly other records suggest that Preston should be recorded as age 6. So to be consistent, Barbara would really be 10. If Barbara is not the same child as Rose, then the ages reported in this census for Sarah and Preston are probably right as well, and their birth dates should be adjusted to 1863 and 1865 rather than 1862 and 1864.

1880 census of Morgan Co., Ky, Elk Fork precinct, enumerated 12 June, lists on p. 19 as family #133/134:
Williams, Mary J., 46, widowed, b. Ky Missouri N.C., farming; Preston H., 16, son, works on farm; Telitha A., 14, dau; Mary S., 12, dau; Leander J., 10, son; Rachel M., 6, dau; Alwilda, 4, dau; Jas. Hayden, 52, brother-in-law, no occupation, “right arm amputated caused by rheumatism”. All except Mary J. born Ky Ky Ky.

The next household is headed by Monroe Conley, who is married to Sarah J. Williams. There are a total of five Williams households on the page, including families headed by Rachel Williams, widow of Richard’s brother Anderson.
